Digital Storytelling 2010 : Visual Effects – Into New Dimensions was the fifth annual seminar here in Oslo, 14.April, where many speakers from the International, Norwegian and Scandinavian film community presented their work.

Martin Skarbø from Stripe had a little talk to showcase the visual effects work he did as VFX supervisor on the full CG-animated feature “Pelle Politibil – Går i Vannet” for Qvisten Animation / Neofilm in 2009.

Martin Skarbø has been in charge of making all the water and particle effects for the feature, which has made him the absolute best Realflow expert in Norway. We hope to make good use of that expertise as much as possible now that hes back. Thirsty anyone? Give us a ring if you need fluids!

Fredrik Fottland has been in charge of shading and pre-render setup on the feature, a skill that he started out developing on his last feature film Elias in 2007. We are very happy to have him back under our roof again to secure the workflow in these areas.

That makes our 3D department complete again with Martin Klint on animation and rigging, Fredrik Fottland on modeling, shading and rendering, and Martin Skarbø on fluids and particles. Of course these are just our individual specialties, were usually all over the place intertwining each others skill sets.

This was collaborative job with Qvisten animation for Nordisk Film, where Qvisten did concept, modeling, rigging and animation, and Stripe did texturing, shading, lighting, rendering and composite.

The main purpose with the pilot was to introduce the general look and feel for the upcoming series and possibly feature film about our hero Inky and his friends. The Pilot and before that a teaser trailer was shown for the firs time at internationally acclaimed Cartoon Forum which took place in the Norwegian city of Stavanger in September this year.

The complex task of making underwater world’s was by far the most demanding task of the production. We tried to make the environment as organic and alive as possible. With the use of animated ocean surfaces, caustics, godrays, bubbles and animated vegetation we made sure that the every frame had the look and feel of underwater.

The pilot was a great success, and Nordisk film who was the client was very pleased with the result.

Stripe would like to thank the team at Qvisten and all the freelancers that worked on this very intense production.

We also did a short title sequence consisting of the amanda statue and some cardboard figures of former hosts.

The two hosts were shot entirely on green-screen for implementing in plates from the movies. We had to make sure the lighting were as close to the original lighting in each scene.

Knerten

We helped Qvisten with compositing on 8 shots. The job was to composite Knertens head and place it on the dummy shot on set. It was a funny job and we are looking forward to the premiere later this fall.

We did work on one of the commercials, with the snowboarder Helene, and supervised the hellicopter shots on one of the other films.

Short break before another take

Most of the work consisted of removing ugly marks on the walls and inserting content on the different lcd screens and posters.

Faking windows

The most complex shot in the film was the establishing shot where we can se the whole airport outside of the windows. 3D models combined with a matte painting did the trick.
